HE KNOWS WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER- BY PASTOR GREG ELKAN
_“…and will remember their sins no more”_ – Heb 8:12
One way in which the forgiveness of sins is sometimes taught is that once you we repent of our sins, God absolutely forgets about them; in other words, He blots them out such that He has no memory of them at all. When asked how this is even possible, the typical response is that God can somehow make Himself forget what you did wrong such that when you talk to Him about it later, He responds with something like _“Huh, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”_
Passages used to justify this notion include Jer 31:34 _(“for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more”),_ Ps 103:12 _(“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us”),_ and Isa 43:25 _(“I, even I, am he that blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and will not remember your sins.”)_
Notice, however, in all the above passages that the word “forget” does not appear. While the LORD says He will “not remember” our sins; He never says He will _forget_ our sins. God is omniscient, that is an intrinsic part of His nature; and nowhere in scripture did he say He will magically wipe out _His own_ memory of our sins.
What He did promise us, however, is that He will _“remember them no more!”_ Halleluiah! That means He will not charge it to your account. Through the substitutionary work of Jesus on the Cross, God _“made Him, (Jesus) who knew no sin, to be sin for us; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.”_ (2Co 5:21).
This distinction is important. When you as a Believer come into God’s presence, you are not talking to someone who doesn’t _know what you did last summer”_ (to borrow the title of the gory horror classic). Oh no, He absolutely knows what you did, but by His mercy He has charged His son instead with that sin.
This is the beauty – and gravity – of God’s forgiveness. Have you asked for forgiveness through the blood of Christ? God is waiting to forgive you on the basis of the Cross. Run to Him today.
AMEN...
More Blessings await you today; you’ll not miss them in Jesus’ Name.
