UNLOCKING THE POWER OF STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT- BY ABU QAANIT

At my very leisure and preferred time, as a political enthusiast, my University's politics and its membership has been my concerns ever since I joined the political system in my faculty, my department to be precise. I made a thorough study and decided to make this write up to influence and challenge my study on the students unionism system, in my University at large. The article, hence, delves into the reasons behind this decline in students involvement, explores the negative effects of such disengagement, and ultimately highlights the positive impact that active participation in the student union government can have on students' lives. Don't worry, I'll make it short and succinct!

In the bustling university environment, students' unionism plays a vital role in shaping the campus experience. However, an alarming trend has emerged at the university, where some students are opting out of participating in the student union government. 

The University of Ilorin has witnessed a decline in student union government participation due to various reasons. Firstly, some students prioritize personal business ventures that provide financial stability, assuming that involvement in the government is solely driven by monetary gain. Popular with the saying "no be money Unna wan go chop there"
Secondly, concerns over potential academic distractions have led certain students to abandon student unionism in favor of focusing on their educational pursuits and maintaining good grades. Lastly, the negative influence associated with student politics has deterred many from engaging in such activities, fearing the consequences it might have on their personal and academic lives.

Apparently the aforementioned are the common reasons students' unionism faces when it comes to students involvement and they seem valid, it is essential to recognize the positive effects of active involvement in the University of Ilorin student union government. 
Firstly, participation fosters a sense of community and belonging, allowing students to connect with like-minded individuals and build lasting friendships. Moreover, engaging in student politics provides a platform for personal growth, leadership development, and the acquisition of valuable skills that are highly valued in the professional world.

To address the decline in student union government participation, it is crucial and essential to emphasize the benefits and dispel misconceptions. By actively involving themselves in the student union government, students can contribute to decision-making processes that shape their educational experience. They have the opportunity to influence policies to deter issues of minority so far representatives fit in for challenges, advocate for their peers, and effect positive change within the university community. Additionally, participating in student unionism allows individuals to broaden their horizons, gain a deeper understanding of social issues, and develop a sense of responsibility towards society.

I said I'll make it short, to conclude, many reasons have been given on the various reasons why there is a decline in UNILORIN students' union and the short and best way to defeat these challenges. In addition, we can inspire students to actively engage in the student union government. Embracing this opportunity enables students to shape their university experience, develop essential skills, and contribute to a vibrant and inclusive campus community. Let us encourage and empower students at the University of Ilorin to unlock the power of student unionism and create a brighter future together.
