ODE: "INDEPENDENCE" BY SAMUEL JAMES
In the days when flowers fell
And gardens fold
A dying leaf whispered green
To our clanking chains
Trudging the earth with heavy footsteps
And splashing freedom
On walls of captivity
Behold the fragrance of newness!
Thunder echoed the whispery
Howling of the wind
In a loud baritone that shook
Off the dusty dress of the soil
Leaving the Earth nude and fearful
In the beautiful wraps
Of October 1st, 1960
Is a present called independence
Happy independence, my Nigeria!
