THE UNFORGETTABLE YORÙBÁ!: OLUBAYO ADEFEMI (1985-2011)
One of the finest full back, Adefemi started his career at Bendel Insurance before joining Delta Force in 2002. He moved to Isreal in 2005 and spent three years playing top flight football at Hapoel Jerusalem, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Hakoah Ramat and Hapoel Bnei Lod.
Adefemi was part of the Nigeria's U20 team at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in Netherlands, he scored in the penalty shootout in a breathtaking 10-9 win over Netherlands in the Quarterfinals. His second goal in that tournament was in a 3-0 thrashing of Morocco in the Semi-finals. The team ended the tournament with a silver medal in a controversial 2-1 loss to Lionel Messi's Argentina.
Adefemi was also a crucial member of the U23 Nigeria team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China. He scored the opener in a 4-1 win over Belgium in the Semi-final. Sadly, the team yet again lost to Argentina in the final.
He also played for Rapid Bucureṣti and SCR Altach both in Austria before signing for Greece's Skoda Xanthi in the summer of 2010.
On April 18, 2011 Adefemi was driving to the airport to catch a flight to Nigeria in preparation for his wedding with model, Shade Adeshina but he never made it to the airport. His car skid off the road and crashed into an highway pole. He was pronounced dead on the spot. He was only 25 at the time.
